To see if men (and women) really deceive themselves in this manner, a group of researchers obtained data from the popular physical attractiveness ratings site Hot or Not and studied users’ behaviors.

(The researchers: Leonard Lee of Columbia, Dan Ariely of M.I.T., George Loewenstein of Carnegie Mellon and James Hong and Jim Young, the founders of Hot or Not)

The site has evolved to include a dating service dubbed “Meet Me,” where instead of rating a person’s photo, users pick the photos of the people they’re interested in. If both people are open to meeting each other, then the initial contact can be made.

Here are the major findings:

Men were more open to potential dates than women, by 240 percent.
Men were also much more generous in their appraisals than women.
If you were on the receiving end of a request, then the likelihood of accepting increased if other Hot or Not users found the requester to be attractive.
And if you were deemed attractive by the community, then you were more likely to be picky in saying yes to potential dates. For every point lower you scored on the Hot or Not 1-10 scale, the chances of saying yes to a potential date increased by 25 percent.
There was no difference between how attractive and unattractive people rated other users.

So the fact that nearly all users are in agreement about who is pretty and not-so-pretty and that, despite this, unattractive people were more open to potential dates than attractive people, lead the researchers to conclude that ugly people who date other ugly people do in fact know the pedigree of their partners. How do less attractive people cope? In a separate study, the researchers asked 24 participants of an online speed-dating event to complete a short survey in “which they indicated, on a ten-point scale, how much they weighed each of six criteria (physical attractiveness, intelligence, sense of humor, kindness, confidence, and extroversion) when selecting potential dates.” After the event, the participants then rated the attractiveness of all those they’d talked to. It turns out that less attractive people put relatively less weight on the physical appearance of potential partners and relatively more weight on other qualities than attractive people do.

Seen from the perspective of hedonic adaptation, the results of both our main and follow-up field studies perhaps highlight one plausible mechanism underlying how people cope with attractive options that are beyond their reach: when faced with a range of options (e.g. potential partners) or life situations (e.g. states of health) of varying hedonic value, instead of adopting a “sour grapes” mindset and deluding themselves that what is unattainable isn’t as great as what it looks, people divert their focus to the merits of options that are attainable to them. From an evolutionary perspective, such motivated changes in dating preferences can potentially increase one’s pool of potential mates, reducing the likelihood that physically unattractive people will end up without partners, and supporting assortative mating. Much like the famous line from a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song, people find a way to love the ones they can be with.

The researchers also unearthed another interesting bit of human behavior. They plotted the likelihood that a user on Hot or Not would say yes to a potential date based on the requester’s attractiveness:

Not surprisingly, as the requester became more attractive relative to the requestee, the chances of acceptance increased. But there is a dip once the requester’s attractiveness is about 4 points higher than the requestees. This suggests that, even though the hotter person is making the first move, Hot or Not users (and probably all us) are susceptible to the “out-of-my-league” mentality. MEET MEN TONIGHT

Going On a Date Without Breaking the Bank

According to one economist, the true cost of a date is around $250. That includes dinner, a movie, and the opportunity cost of time spent on a date. I’m not sure I buy the “cost of time” part, but I agree that the whole “dinner and a movie” routine can get pricey pretty quickly.

That’s why I tend to suggest other activities. My go-to activity for a cheap date? Browsing an independent bookstore as my date and I chat about our favorite books, take turns reading book jackets, and search for the silliest titles. With summer approaching, there are plenty of low-cost ways to have fun on a date, both indoors and out. Here are eight ideas you may want to consider.

1. Explore a museum.

One of dating coach Sandy Weiner’s favorite low-cost first dates was going to a museum in New York City. “It was so much easier to talk to each other while viewing art, rather than over a table, sipping lattes or eating dinner,” she says. The exhibit sparked interesting conversation and Weiner and her date revealed a lot about each other through the art: intelligence, observation skills, background. Better yet, many museums designate a certain night of the week for free admission. The Museum of Modern Art in New York, for example, offers free admission on Friday evenings between 4 pm and 8 pm.

2. Visit a flea market.

Lizzy Shaw, a Los Angeles public relations professional, had a great first date at the Santa Monica Airport flea market. “I think you really get to know a lot about a person by seeing what they buy, how they interact with the sellers, if they’re patient or not with what you’re looking for, if they like what you’re buying,” she says. That person turned out not to be “the one,” she adds, but “it really was a great, illuminating date.”

3. Watch an outdoor movie.

Many cities and towns host free outdoor movies during the summer. Writer Mikey Rox says he and his fiancé have had a blast at outdoor movies in NYC and Baltimore. “We packed a picnic, put down a big blanket and settled in on the grass or the pier – wherever a good movie is playing – to lay back and enjoy the show,” he says. “Afterward, a nice walk hand-in-hand puts the cap on an inexpensive, fun-filled, intimate evening.”

4. Pack a picnic.

What could be more romantic than a picnic blanket, the great outdoors, and some home-cooked finger food (or sandwiches from a local eatery)? A picnic did the trick for Denise Winston, a money & time saving expert based in Bakersfield, California. “We are now married,” she says. ”It was the thought and effort that went into such a simple yet romantic idea.” Winston’s now husband packed an ice chest full of fast food. “I would have loved it just as much if it was a PB and J sandwich,” she says.

5. Take a hike.

Even if you can’t get to a hiking trail, city walks can be fun, too. James Cholke, of San Diego, suggests having a “doggy date.” (Don’t have a dog? Offer to walk a friend’s.) “And if you both love dogs in general, you’ll have a great conversation starter, nice day or early evening out, and something to help ease the tension if there are awkward pauses during the date,” he says.

6. Eat cheap ethnic food.

Forget five-star dining! Annie D’Souza, the Twin Cities community manager for review site Yelp.com, says hole-in-the-wall restaurants can be even more fun (not mention easier on your wallet). “My fiancé took me to a cheap hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant for our first date,” she says. “He used dodgy restaurants to ‘test’ his dates and weed out the unadventurous eaters. Someone broke into my car while I was passing the test inside, but we have a great story to tell for the rest of our lives!”

7. Go stargazing.

Emma Merkas owns the website $30 Date Night and says she and her husband go on dates each week using one of the ideas from the site. Stargazing is one of their favorites. “Wait for a clear night, then get online and download your area and date-specific sky chart for the night,” she suggests. “Then spend your night picking out the different constellations and wishing on shooting stars.”

8. Rent a canoe.

Susan Tordella, an author and parenting expert in Ayer, Massachusetts, says, “one of the best dates I’ve ever been on was a week-long canoe-backpacking trip to the wilderness of Algonquin Provincial Park, north of Toronto. We paddled, portaged, cooked, shared a tent and bared each others’ bottoms and souls amid moose-sightings, bear tracks and getting hopelessly lost, wet and muddy.” The experience was a great way to get to know the man she eventually married and see if he was up for a challenge. Not ready for a week-long adventure? You can always start out with a day trip.

How to tell in 15 minutes whether someone likes you

Look Closely

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to tell within fifteen minutes whether someone likes you or not? There are subtle clues that people inadvertently give that can let you know if they feel favorably about you, or not. Most of these clues are expressed unconsciously and via body language that is observable.

The Eyebrow Raise

The eyebrow raise is generally reserved for members of the opposite sex who like what they see and it happens straight away. You will have to be on the ball to catch this happening as it only takes a second or so to take place, but is a clear indication that the person raising their eyebrows is pleased to see you.

The Smile

Although smiling can be faked a genuine smile can easily be separated from a false one because it is accompanied by eye contact and is broad, usually showing a hint of teeth when it is heartfelt and your entrance has taken the smiler by surprise.

A smile which is more of a grimace, or which is delivered with lips firmly shut tight, downward turning corners of the lips and a far away glassy stare is more of a made up effort than an indication that someone likes you.

The Lean.

If you are sat with a person who likes you then they are likely to lean in toward you as you converse. If they don’t like you very much then the opposite is true. They may well lean back away from you.

If you are standing then the other person will stand fairly close to you if they like you and will give you all of their attention. If not, they will hang back from achieving close proximity with you.

Feet.

It is a positive sign if the other person has their feet pointing toward you, as we generally unconsciously point out feet where we want to go.

Of course, if the other person has their feet pointed toward the door then they probably are desperate to make a speedy exit.

Eye Contact

A person who is enjoying being with you will hold your gaze a few seconds longer than most other people. They will look directly at your face and their eyes will occasionally settle on your lips if they feel attracted to you also.

Touching.

When we like someone we are drawn to touch them, even when we try not to! The touching isn’t overtly sexual in nature, and may be subtle such as little pats on the knee or touches on the forearm.

If the other person touches your hair often then this is a sure sign that they feel romantically about you, especially if they slowley move strands of hair away from your face while looking into your eyes.

Mirroring.

Another sign that someone likes you is where they mirror your actions. If, for example, they pick up their glass to drink and put it down each time you do you can bet that they feel positively towards you.

Grooming and Shoe Tipping.

When a woman likes a man, and she is wearing the right shoes, she may well inadvertently play with the straps or tip her shoe on and off.

Both men and women tend to play with their hair and perform grooming gestures to make sure that they look their best when they like you.

All of these examples of body language indicate how someone feels about you and if they perform several within fifteen minutes you will definitely know that they like you.
